My team just wrapped hiring for two Developer Advocate roles. I know the market is tough so wanted to share a few things I’ve noticed that could help you stand out if you’re looking.

  1. Lead with customer impact, not just activity. “I spoke at 5 events” is cool but “I helped solve a critical issue for our customers, then shared the solution at 5 industry events, resulting in 40+ follow-up conversations” is cooler.

  2. Make your recent work easy to find. If your best example is from more than 12 months ago, that’s a concern given how fast things are moving these days. Include direct links from your resume to blog posts, demos, or talks from the last 6-9 months.

  3. Feel free to DM hiring managers but don’t take a lack of response personally, I was drowning in messages. I also didn’t want to sidestep my amazing recruiting partner by showing preference to folks who were engaging outside our application process.

  4. Do your homework. Candidates who had read our handbook, understood our values, and could articulate how their experience aligned with our team’s mission really stood out. You can separate yourself from the pack by showing interest and understanding of the team you’re looking to join.

Hope this helps. Good luck to all those looking and thank you to everyone who expressed interest or applied for the roles.
